With years of self-taught computer programming, combined with a little experience from the Pearl City Computer Geek Society, Ryan has learned a lot about the latest technology, including free and open-source alternatives to high-cost software. Open-Source technology, including OpenOffice.org, Linux, and other free software programs, combined with thoroughly researched hardware can cut costs for every department. Drug Prevention
While drugs become a bigger problem for cities throughout the world, Ryan plans to focus on preventing drugs in youth. Future problems can be prevented if drug problems are squashed at the root, which means early prevention and education. Drugs hurt families and damage futures, while economically sends large amounts of money out of the city... (continued).
The Budget
Budgeting decisions get tougher and tougher every year, with cities throughout the country facing cuts in state funding. Ryan plans to help fight budget woes with lower cost technology, and by analyzing the effects of small changes throughout the city. Combined with an Open-Source software initiative, costs in all departments can be cut, providing for more efficient use of allocated money.
Youth Activities
There is little for youth to do in Muscatine, and without several positive options for youth involvement, youth tend to be more exposed to drug abuse, alcohol, and crime. Ryan plans to work with local youth to create more activities for them, similar to some businesses in the Quad Cities and Hamakua Place in Washington County.
