New Technology
With years of self-taught computer programming, combined with a little experience from the Pearl City Computer Geek Society, Ryan has learned a lot about the latest technology, including free and open-source alternatives to high-cost software. Open-Source technology, including OpenOffice.org, Linux, and other free software programs, combined with thoroughly researched hardware can cut costs for every department. In situations where proprietary windows-only software is an absolute must, open-source technology can be either combined with various other open-source solutions, or systems can still use required commercial operating systems when necessary.
We plan to use a model similar to that currently in place in Largo, FL. Largo uses a client-server network utilizing various versions of the Open Source Linux software, combined with the smart use of thin clients. By installing software primarily on a server, which is much more easily updated and manageable, coupled with the use of Open Source (Free) software can make our technology the most efficient in the area. For example, Largo spends only half of what similarly sized cities spend on less reliable systems.
