Youth Activities
Bringing more youth activities to Muscatine is a priority for the campaign. At the present time, there are so few positive alternatives for youth involvement - and youth don't go out looking for them. As a result, dozens of Muscatine youth turn to drugs, alcohol, and 'partying'. These youth get involved with those who are already considered the 'bad crowd', and eventually become a member of this negative part of society.
Presenting youth with alternatives, such as a youth center is the most effective long-term solution to the drug problem in Muscatine. More youth activities will also lower juvenile crime and violence rates, and lead to happier and more socially interactive children.
According to data released by the Muscatine Police Department:
"Drug crimes among juveniles younger than thirteen and females under 18 have continually increased. These two categories seem to be most at risk of increased criminal offending."
This simplified example helps illustrate the problem we are dealing with. Youth in Muscatine are often involved with few alternative activities outside of school, that they end up in negative situations. We plan to focus on giving youth a positive, drug-free environment to interact and socialize in. Combining this with efforts that help teach children the dangers of drug use, will be an effective way of lowering drug use rates in Muscatine.
